The Changing Faces series came to life in 1994: ten years later there are nearly sixty titles in the series with many more planned. The series covers the City of Oxford including its many suburbs, county towns and villages. Although each book is packed with pictures of all kind, it is people that dominate. This is not particularly surprising since many of the authors have duel interests in local and family history, a consequence of this is that large numbers of people featured in the photographs are named.
Typically the books cover local businesses, from the car factories to corner shops, school life, including recreational activities. People can be seen at all sorts of events, street parties, outings, fetes, carnivals etc. Sport plays a great part, including football, cricket, darts to the more sedentary shove ha’penny, the list goes on and on. Then there are the many clubs and societies, including bell ringers, drama clubs, bands, folk dancers and the more obscure activities of the Mummers. Church life is also featured, the many pictures of church events confirm the strong influence that the church once held in peoples lives. However, there are just as many pictures of public houses where activities of a different kind took place.
There are maps in most books, also reproduced are pages from old programmes of local events. There are extracts from street directories and adverts for companies now almost forgotten.
The success and uniqueness of this series is due to the source material, for the most part contributed by hundreds of individuals and gathered, collated and transcribed by the authors. The first book in this series has now been printed four times, need I say more?
